After an exciting wait for luxury enthusiasts, Mercedes-Benz and Moncler have finally unveiled their latest phase of creative partnership at “The City of Genius” show in Shanghai on October 19, 2024. This collaboration introduces a new campaign, titled “Past Forward: Where the Future is Driven by the Past.” A highlight of the event was the debut of “Project G-Class Past II Future,” designed by the acclaimed NIGO. The initiative presents a fully restored 1990s Mercedes-Benz G-Class, seamlessly merging nostalgia with innovation. A limited run of 20 vehicles inspired by this design will be launched, along with an exclusive fashion collection set to debut in April 2025.

As an extension of the iconic Moncler Genius project, “The City of Genius” transcended a mere exhibition of vehicles and apparel, evolving into a convergence of fashion, art, and culture. Guided by NIGO’s creative vision, the showcase featured an impressive lineup of collaborators, including notable figures in entertainment and fashion industry, such as A$AP Rocky, Willow Smith, Edward Enninful (OBE), and Hiroshi Fujiwara’s FRGMT, alongside Donald Glover’s Gilga Farm, LuLu Li, and Palm Angels. Special installations by acclaimed designers Rick Owens and Jil Sander further emphasized the innovative spirit of Moncler Genius 2024.

“Project G-Class Past II Future” marks the second collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Moncler, following the launch of “PROJECT MONDO G” at Moncler’s “The Art of Genius” event in London in 2023. This latest work by NIGO fuses Moncler’s distinctive quilted aesthetic with the robust silhouette of the G-Class. With dimensions of 4.5 meters in length, 1.9 meters in width, and 2 meters in height, the vehicle makes a powerful statement. Its minimalist two-tone color scheme—comprised of matte olive green and gray—is enhanced by striking black and gold accents, giving the G-Class a modern yet timeless appeal.

Maintaining key features of the iconic G-Class, such as the spare tire mounted on the rear, retro black steel wheels, a foldable windshield, and a golden fuel canister, NIGO has introduced modern touches to the interior. The sound system, developed in collaboration with sound artist Devon Turnbull, includes removable speakers and a roof-mounted audio system. The checkered upholstery pays homage to the original G-Class design, while the orange and gold accents reflect the fashion collection that connects Mercedes-Benz, Moncler, and NIGO.

Alongside this unique vehicle release, Moncler launches a unisex fashion capsule collection that draws inspiration from 1990s aesthetics while incorporating contemporary streetwear elements. The collection features items such as varsity jackets, hoodies, flannel shirts, and Bermuda shorts, along with lighter puffer jackets, parkas, and windbreakers. The classic color palette showcases shades of blue, black, green, and white, accented by orange. Noteworthy designs include archival prints that celebrate the collaboration’s heritage, with a satin jacket prominently featuring logos and visuals from both brands.

The core narrative of the collaboration comes to life through Thibaut Grevet’s creative vision. The campaign elegantly illustrates a transition from a dream-like concept to a vibrant urban experience, framed by a stylish rooftop featuring sleek metallic elements. Set to launch in April 2025, Mercedes-Benz, Moncler, and NIGO are reviving the 1990s vibe with their exciting partnership that infuses a fresh, modern twist. As they bridge the past and the future, they invite enthusiasts to embrace a lifestyle that celebrates both heritage and forward-thinking creativity, making a powerful statement in the world of luxury.
